Macedonia (2015)

Macedonia is one of the poorest countries in Europe with an estimated 30% of its population living in poverty and a similar percentage unemployed. The country has one of the highest levels of income inequality within Europe with reports suggesting that over 70% of people struggle to keep up with daily living costs. In 2014 the Macedonia government launched their €560million project "Skopje 2014", an installation of 120 historical monuments and statues in the country's capital. Some believe the project is a way for the country to affirm its national identity whilst the ongoing naming dispute with Greece continues, a dispute that stops Macedonia being able to join the EU. Citizens frustrated by the project's spend, feel that the money should have been used help the country's struggling economy or put back into the education or welfare system.
